# TiVo plans to turn automatic ad skipping into a paid add-on
TiVo is preparing to change one of its best-known DVR features from a free convenience into a paid extra. According to a Cord Cutters News report, the company has begun notifying customers that SkipMode, which lets viewers jump over commercials with a single button press and in some cases automatically, will no longer be available in its current form starting November 2, 2026.
The change matters because SkipMode has long been part of the TiVo pitch. After a show finished recording, TiVo could add markers that let viewers skip straight from one program segment to the next, avoiding the ad break in between. On newer TiVo Experience 4 devices, users could even enable automatic skipping so the box handled the commercials without any remote input. That convenience helped distinguish TiVo from both cable-company boxes and other DVRs.
Under the new plan, that automatic and one-button version is moving to a paid add-on called Premium Auto Commercial Skip. TiVo will offer a 30-day free trial in November, after which customers who want to keep the feature will have to pay an additional monthly fee. The company has not yet published the price, and it says more details about supported devices, supported recordings and pricing will be sent out before the cutoff date.
The transition is deliberately gradual. Existing recordings that already have SkipMode markers will continue to work until the change takes effect, and subscribers do not need to take immediate action. Even after the free version disappears, viewers can still skip commercials manually using the 30-second skip button or the fast-forward controls on their remotes. Those methods do not depend on TiVo’s ad-detection data and have existed for years.
The business context is also important. TiVo’s parent company, Xperi, has moved away from making new DVR hardware and has focused more on its smart-TV operating system and advertising technology. In that setting, charging extra for the most convenient version of ad skipping looks less like a feature tweak and more like a new way to extract revenue from the company’s remaining DVR base.
That may be a hard sell for longtime users. Many TiVo owners have kept their boxes specifically because SkipMode made live-TV recording feel smarter and less tedious. Turning that function into an add-on will force them to decide whether the convenience is worth paying for or whether they are willing to go back to manual fast-forwarding.
The company’s immediate message is that nothing is changing overnight. SkipMode remains in place until the November cutoff, and TiVo says more information is coming. But the direction is clear: a feature that once helped define the product is being repositioned as a premium option, which says as much about TiVo’s business priorities as it does about the future of DVRs.
