The internet has chosen its meme of the year, and the winner is a squirrel named KOJO. The animal became an online phenomenon after a photograph captured him sitting upright with an unusually intense expression, one paw held close to his chest and his eyes fixed directly toward the camera. The image originally appeared to be an ordinary wildlife photograph, but users immediately began interpreting KOJO’s face as everything from disbelief and suspicion to the exact moment someone realizes a situation has gone completely wrong.

The photograph began spreading slowly before exploding across X, TikTok, Instagram and Reddit. Users cropped KOJO into reaction images, placed captions above his face and inserted the squirrel into completely unrelated situations. One popular format used KOJO whenever someone had just heard something unbelievable. Another showed the squirrel staring at collapsing stock charts, failed exams or chaotic group chats. Within days, the photograph had become flexible enough to represent almost any moment of confusion, disappointment or silent judgment.

What made KOJO particularly effective as a meme was the ambiguity of his expression. He did not look clearly scared, angry or happy. Instead, his face seemed to sit somewhere between concern and complete disbelief, allowing people to project whatever emotion they wanted onto the photograph. One user could use KOJO to represent financial panic, another could use him after receiving a strange text message, and someone else could simply post the image without any caption at all.

That flexibility helped the meme move far beyond the original wildlife post.

Soon, KOJO was everywhere.

Users placed him behind trading desks, inside classrooms, at corporate meetings and in scenes from famous movies. AI-generated edits showed the squirrel wearing suits, astronaut helmets and medieval armor. Artists began drawing their own versions of KOJO while exaggerating his wide-eyed expression. Some accounts even started replying to bad news with nothing more than the original photograph.

The squirrel’s name became part of the meme itself.

People began writing “KOJO knows” under situations where someone appeared suspicious.

Another popular phrase became “KOJO saw everything.”

When something especially strange happened online, users simply posted the image and wrote:

KOJO.

The meme eventually became large enough to enter a online competition searching for the year’s most memorable internet image. The contest brought together viral animals, reaction pictures and other meme formats that had circulated throughout the year, with users voting through several rounds.

KOJO quickly emerged as one of the strongest entries.

Supporters reposted the photograph alongside voting links and began creating campaign-style edits for the squirrel. One image showed KOJO standing behind a podium with the words “VOTE KOJO.” Another depicted him wearing a crown with the caption “THE INTERNET HAS SPOKEN.”

By the final round, the contest had become surprisingly competitive, but KOJO’s supporters continued pushing the image across social platforms until voting closed.

When the results were announced, KOJO finished first.
