# Isar Aerospace Says It Reached Orbit on Second Flight, Marking a Milestone for European Launch

Isar Aerospace said on 2026-09-06 that its second flight succeeded in reaching orbit and deploying payloads, a result the company described as a first for a European commercial launch provider. In its announcement, the company said the mission, called Onward and Upward, lifted off from its dedicated launch complex at Andøya Space in Norway and completed the key steps needed for orbital success.

In the announcement, Isar Aerospace said the vehicle passed MaxQ, completed main engine cutoff and stage separation, ignited the second stage as planned, crossed the Karman line at 100 kilometers, and carried payloads through circularization and spacecraft separation. It added that the payloads came from the Microlauncher Competition run by the German Space Agency at DLR and funded through ESA Boost.

The company framed the flight as a major change in Europe's launch capabilities. Daniel Metzler, Isar Aerospace's chief executive and co-founder, said the company had opened space from Continental Europe and that Europe now had sovereign access to space. He also said the firm would turn to scaling launch vehicle production and filling an order pipeline that it says is already under pressure from global demand.

Isar Aerospace also used the announcement to highlight the industrial side of the business. The company said Spectrum vehicles 3 through 7 are already in production and that a new 40,000-square-meter facility will eventually allow it to build up to 40 launch vehicles a year. It said it is also building a second launch complex in Nova Scotia, Canada, to support mid- and high-inclination orbits for Earth observation and communications.

The announcement is significant not only because of the technical claim, but because of the strategic language the company attached to it. Isar Aerospace argues that launch remains the key bottleneck in the global space industry. A successful orbital flight from Europe would be important to customers who want alternatives to non-European launch providers, especially for small and medium satellites.

The company also said it is still confirming satellite status with customers, a reminder that launch success and payload confirmation are not always the same thing. Even so, the mission declaration suggests that Isar Aerospace is now positioning itself less as an experimental startup and more as a scale manufacturer with a launch service business.

For Europe, the claim is straightforward: if the company has indeed completed a commercial orbital delivery from its own launch site, it would represent a new benchmark for the region's private space sector. The next question is whether the company can turn the result into a repeatable launch cadence, manufacturing volume, and a reliable commercial service.
