Sovereignty won the $7 million Breeders' Cup Classic at Keeneland on Saturday, surging into contention around the final turn and holding off The Puma by 1¾ lengths in the season-ending championship race.

Ridden by Junior Alvarado, Sovereignty approached the stretch behind stablemate Knightsbridge, who had set the pace with defending Classic winner Forever Young nearby. Alvarado moved the eventual winner to the outside in a group of four, and Sovereignty accelerated past the leaders before resisting late challenges from The Puma and Forever Young.

The victory was Alvarado's first in the Classic and trainer Bill Mott's third. Mott had not won the race since 2011. Sovereignty completed the 1¼ miles in 2 minutes, 0.36 seconds and delivered Godolphin, his breeder, its first Classic victory.

The result completed a notable return after Sovereignty missed the previous year's Classic because of a fever. He entered this edition with one of the strongest résumés in the seven-horse field, having won the Kentucky Derby, Belmont Stakes and Travers Stakes the previous season. Keeping the horse in training for another year created the opportunity for a Classic campaign that had been unavailable to him as a three-year-old.

Knightsbridge nearly converted his early advantage into an upset, but Sovereignty's stretch run proved decisive. The Puma finished second, while Knightsbridge held third. T O Password and Forever Young followed. Forever Young, sent off as the 8-5 favorite in an attempt to repeat his Classic victory, faded after racing near the lead. Golden Tempo, winner of the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes, was never a factor and finished sixth.

Sovereignty paid $5.94 to win, $4.16 to place and $2.94 to show. The Puma returned $11.22 and $6.10, while Knightsbridge paid $3.76 to show. The win was Sovereignty's second consecutive victory and reinforced his standing among the leading older dirt horses.

The Classic headlined a broad Breeders' Cup program at Keeneland. Aidan O'Brien moved ahead of Bob Baffert for the event's career training record when Benvenuto Cellini won the $5 million Turf, giving O'Brien his 23rd Breeders' Cup victory. Nitrogen took the $2 million Distaff, while Deterministic won the Mile for the first Breeders' Cup victories of jockey Kendrick Carmouche and trainer Miguel Clement.

For Sovereignty's connections, however, the central result was the completion of a comeback to the race they had been forced to miss. His late speed settled a competitive Classic and rewarded Godolphin's decision to keep a proven champion in training for another season.
